Walk this Way!

Walking is a great form of physical activity with many benefits to your health and well-being. Check out some of the benefits of walking below!

No Gym Membership Required

Walking does not require any specific gym membership nor does it require any equipment. If you want to walk on a treadmill at your home or a gym- go for it! Or put ankle weights around your ankles to make your walk a bit more challenging, but this is not required. Walking does not have to cost money and can be a great way to be active.

Mental and Physical Health Benefits

The Center's for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity per week and children engage in 60 minutes per day of physical activity. So, try walking to get your body moving. Go on a walk with your family, your children, or alone. This can also help with mental health by reducing stress and anxiety.

Walk Where you Want

Walk where it is best for you. Walking can be done in many different places-when, where, and how is up to you. Since not all neighborhoods or cities may be walkable or accessible, get creative. There are many different places and ways to walk.

Try some of these places for your next walk:

  • Walk around the neighborhood.

  • Go the mall and walk around indoors or find an outdoor mall.

  • Hike or walk on a trail.

  • Join a charity walk to walk for a cause that is important to you.

  • Walk around a museum.

  • Walk around an outdoor farmers market, art fair, or event.

Add Walking to your Daily Checklist

Try to incorporate walking into your daily routine. If you are able and it is available to you and your family, walk to the park or walk to school. When in a parking lot, park at the end of the parking lot to increase the amount of walking to get to the store. Take the stairs if able instead of the elevator. There are ways throughout your daily and weekly routine to include walking!
